Deviance and Crime
juz sharing something i learnt in my interesting deviance lecture tadi ptg (so totally la....haha) our lecturer introduced this concept of Panopticon coined by Jeremy Bentham. its an architectural fascination whereby individuals internalize self-control and discipline due to the fact that there is a power of seeing without being seen. basically, this concept was used in a social control instituition ie the prison whereby inmates are imparted wif the knowledge that they are constantly being observed and hence exercise self-discrestion. in the context of the modern world...this concept is utilised in the existence of gadgets like the CCTV...monitoring individual's movements in an attempt to prevent crime / terrorism(more so after 911 and the London bombing)
ok, in relation to this, we can use the Panopticon concept in the religious context. as we all know, God is all-knowing and all-seeing. based on this knowledge, we as individual human beings are in fact unconsciously exercising self-control and self-policing in the things we do as we hold dear our basic tenets of our religion ie behaving within the boundaries of our religious norms and are aware of the punishments or being labelled if we cross over the envisioned lines.
